Listening Environments & Room Acoustics

Listening Environments & Room Acoustics

The listening environment affects speech audibility and intelligibility for all listeners, especially those with hearing loss.

Considerations:

  • Room acoustics, including background noise and reverberation, are influenced by distance from the speaker, lighting, and visual access.

  • Distance, noise, and reverberation each reduce speech understanding; combined effects are even greater, despite hearing technology use.

  • Many countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, incorporate classroom acoustic standards into building codes.

  • Communication access is also influenced by speech clarity, listener abilities, familiarity with the topic, visual access to speech, and listening fatigue.
