OBJECTIVES: (Competency)

 

  • What accommodations do I need for driving or to be the passenger?
  • How do I communicate with the driving instructor
  • What to do in an emergency (pulled over or emergency vehicle in view)
  • Explain safe driving tips for acoustic and visual accessibility
  • How do I connect my hearing technology to media in the car while still maintaining access to environmental sounds?

OBJECTIVES: (Relatedness)

 

  • Having access to passenger and radio communication is imperative for their relationships

OBJECTIVES: (Autonomy)

 

  • The student tells the instructor how to best communicate for driving needs
  • The student asks the instructor to use remote microphone during instruction
  • The student knows what to say about their hearing loss if there is an emergency or if they are pulled over by law enforcement

ACTIVITIES & RESOURCES

Student design a card (size of a license) that explains hearing and listening needs. 
Print off at event for student to take home
Role play a car situation with music/friends/emergency
Have someone from drivers ed class come and do more direct teaching (rules)
Brainstorm list of auditory cues for driving and how to be more visually vigilant (e.g. turn signal, sirens, etc).
